Why an Energy Profile Score? What does it mean to me?

Electrifying means more than just replacing outdated appliances with cleaner, more efficient, all-electric systems: It involves taking a broad approach so that the transition to clean energy is as cost-effective and energy efficient as possible.

Taking a broad approach means considering an array of clean energy and energy efficiency products and services. Not everyone starts their electrification journey at the same place. Your location, age of your home, and age of appliances are some of factors that can impact your energy profile score before getting started.

By asking some basic questions about your home and appliances, we can get a general idea of your starting point and make a prioritized list of recommendations you can take to continue your electrification journey.

Is the energy profile score weighted in some way based on the technologies?

Yes, some energy efficient appliances and systems can help us save more money and emissions and save more on our bills so we give them a higher score.

Is scoring based on efficiency? For example, I have a fully electric home and drive an electric vehicle and my score was 50%. Is that because my electric appliances are not the most efficient one available?

Yes. Heat resistance systems like stoves, ovens, and clothes dryers are powered with electricity.

However, heat resistance is very inefficient and uses a lot more electricity than other electric appliances such as heat pumps and induction cooking. Your energy profile score is based on not just whether your appliances are powered by electricity. Your score also reflects how efficient your appliances are compared to other systems that also use electricity.

Is it because I don't have solar or batteries...and to that point are solar and batteries part of the score at all?

Solar and storage are renewables, not electrification. So there's a philosophical question I suppose. We definitely want them to be included on the site and point people to them when we can...but are they truly a part of "electrification" or are they the next step after electrification?

While it makes sense to separate solar, batteries, heat pumps, EVs and energy efficiency into different categories, when we think about electrification, we think about all of these as part of an holistic home energy ecosystem. We use electricity to heat and light our homes and cook our food but we can also seal and insulate our homes to make them as efficient as possible and use our homes to generate our own clean, renewable electricity.

Then we can take it a step further by using our homes to charge our cars thereby extending electrification to how we move around. Electrification is more than just using electricity to power appliances. Rather, it's a unified decarbonization, decentralized strategy to eliminate the use of fossil fuels to make our lives more sustainable.

The big three

The 'Big Three' of electrification technologies are heat pumps (air/water), electric vehicles, and solar energy. Focusing on just those things could save you $2,000-3,000 per year on electricity and gasoline and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80%!

That’s why we give these systems a higher score in our energy profile. The rest are the little things we can do now that can make a big difference towards perfecting our electrification journey.

These technologies, systems, and scores will evolve over time and are not the only ways we can electrify and save money. Other things like smart thermostats, electric garden equipment, and e-bikes are just a few more examples of how we reduce our carbon footprint.
